Samsung Gear S2 and Gear Fit 2 gain iOS compatibility in limited beta program

At CES in January, Samsung announced that the Gear S2 would get iOS compatibility later this year. With the announcement (via SamMobile) of a beta program for the iOS Gear Manager app, a wider release is likely imminent.

With the Gear S2, Samsung expanded compatibility and support to all Android devices. Running a version of Tizen, the Gear S2 and Gear Fit 2 have a number of third-party apps, customizable watch faces, and notable features like Samsung Pay for the former device.

Leaked back in April, the Gear Manager allows users to select what notifications are sent to the watch, customize the experience, and download Gear Apps. Due to the restricted nature of iOS compared to Android, this is pretty much in-line with the experience of other third-party smartwatches.

Only those in South Korea can sign up for the beta program. Additional requirements include an iPhone 5 or later running iOS 8.4 and an Apple ID. The survey provides instructions on how to first get the app and then install it.

With the program ending on September 19, it’s likely that a wider launch will come soon after that. The program’s end date could possibly coincide with the availability of the Gear S3 that will be launched at IFA next month.
