Microsoft issues apology over Windows 10 web cam crashes

Numerous users have complained of web cam issues after installing Windows 10

Microsoft has apologised after several end users who installed the Windows 10 Anniversary update have had their web cams crash.

Many have stated that upon downloading Microsoft’s latest OS, their web cam either began to fail to stream, or in the most extreme cases, not work at all.

The fault – which could potentially affect millions of users – appears to have occurred because apps that use the web cam are not supported. Apps that are encoded MJPEG and H.264 are affected once Windows 10 is installed.

Windows 10 allows multiple apps to access web streams. However, with Microsoft’s own admission, it was not transparent enough with app developers whose apps are H.264 and MJPEG encoded.

It has been left up to these developers to update their apps, but this has left customers with the responsibility of downloading the correct updated apps.

Mike M, a member of Windows’ camera team, said in a post: “So yes, MJPEG and H.264 being decoded/filtered out is the result of a set of features we needed to implement, and this behavior was planned, designed, tested, and flighted out to our partners and Windows Insiders around the end of January of this year.

“We worked with partners to make sure their applications continued to function throughout this change, but we have done a poor job communicating this change out to you guys. We dropped the ball on that front, so I’d like to offer my apologies to you all. We’re working on getting better documentation out, to help answer any questions you may have.”

Microsoft has divulged that it will provide patches as soon as possible to resolve this issue, but it has not been confirmed as to when these patches will be released.

In the meantime, many frustrated customers have had to resort to fully restoring their system prior to downloading Windows 10.
