Apple’s 4.7-inch iPhone 7 Lacks Dual Cameras, But It May Finally Gain Optical Image Stabilization
One of the rumors floating around about the iPhone 7 is that it will sport dual cameras on its backside for depth sensing. That might still be the case with the larger size iPhone 7 Plus model, but based on a leaked shot of what's purportedly the camera component for the 4.7-inch iPhone 7, it will have a single rear-facing lens.
In the absence of dual cameras, it appears the single lens design of the iPhone 7 is being upgraded with optical image stabilization (OIS), a feature that's present on the current generation 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus model, but not the smaller iPhone 6s. That's assuming the leaked shot of the camera module by French-language website Nowhereelse.fr is legit.
The site placed the pic of the camera module in a montage of camera components from previous generations iPhone handsets, those other shots plucked from teardowns performed by iFixIt (which incidentally today tore into Samsung's Galaxy Note 7, for anyone interested in that). In the pic of the purported camera of the iPhone 7, you can see cutouts for the parts that are needed for OIS.
If we're to put our faith into the legitimacy of the leaked photo, it would indicate some level of parity between the rear-facing cameras on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, as both would feature OIS for cleaner, less blurry shots. It also hints that rumors of there being dual rear cameras on the iPhone 7 Plus are more likely to be true, as Apple likes for there to certain incentives to buy the bigger, pricier model. Having a dual-camera design could be one of them.
It's also been speculated that Apple will remove the 3.5mm audio jack on the iPhone 7 and use the Lightning port for earphones and headsets. This would allow Apple to build a thinner handset. We should find out soon enough, as Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 7 on September 16, 2016.
