Microsoft has unveiled the first preview of as it looks to continue its bid for PC world domination.

Dubbed Redstone 2, the initial update is now available to users registered for the company's 'Fast Ring' testing program, offering a range of improvements and updates for Microsoft's iconic software.

The launch is set to be the first of many preview build before Microsoft releases Redstone 2, the first proper upgrade next year.

Microsoft admitted that today's release would not include 'many big noticeable changes or new features just yet', but instead will focus on behind the scenes improvements.

However a couple of new additions are present, including new notifications in Windows File Explorer, which will give users more in-depth information about features or new things they can try in Windows 10.

The release also removes support for kernel debugging, but is unable to solve a major problem with Adobe Acrobat Reader, which Microsoft has found crashes when you try and launch it.

The launch comes shortly after Microsoft unveiled details about its future plans in a recent blog post,

The company is believed to be experimenting with a number of upgrades to Cortana for its next Redstone update, including allowing the voice assistant to float around the operating system.

Microsoft could allow Cortana to follow users as they navigate around the operating system, surfacing useful information based on what users are viewing on-screen.

Earlier this year, a source with knowledge of Microsoft's plans claimed the firm had trimmed some of the features initially planned for Redstone 1 to focus on improvements to some of its internal systems.

These under-the-bonnet tweaks should help Microsoft find bugs faster, which should speed up development in future.

Thanks to its free upgrade scheme, Windows 10 cinched the record for the fastest adoption rate of any Microsoft operating system. 

And with 350 million devices now running the new desktop OS – it is more popular than Windows 8, although it still lags behind the trusted Windows 7.
