India PC shipments down 7.4% in March quarter, HP regains top spot

HP regained its position as the industry leader with a quarter of the total market, closely followed by Dell with a market share of 23.5%

New Delhi: Personal computer shipments in India fell 7.4% to 2 million units in the first quarter ending March from the year earlier, hurt by lower spending by both consumers and enterprises, according to a report by research firm Gartner Inc. released on Tuesday.

US-based Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) regained its position as the industry leader with a quarter of the total market, closely followed by Dell Inc. with a market share of 23.5%.

Chinese technology company Lenovo Group Ltd had overtaken HP in the fourth quarter of 2015 to become the largest PC vendor in India, as it benefited from large government contracts.

Lenovo’s market share slipped to the third position at 19.4%.

Both enterprise customers and consumers bought less PCs in the first quarter with the share of the consumer segment falling to 48% from 45% a year earlier.

“With the first quarter being the end of the financial year for some companies, there were expectations that enterprises would exhaust their budgets. However, it did not have much of an impact on the PC market, and the market continues to face a challenging time," said Vishal Tripathi, research director at Gartner.

Mobile PC sales, which include mini notebooks and tablets, fell 13% due to lack of interest from consumers, according to Gartner.

“PC vendors had excess inventory that was carried forward from the fourth quarter of 2015. Gartner analysts believe that inventory will be carried forward into the second quarter of 2016," the research firm said in a statement.

The decline follows the world wide pattern as Gartner in an earlier report had said that worldwide PC shipments saw their steepest decline in the March quarter as consumers shifted to other devices such as smartphones.

Lenovo, however, continues to lead the worldwide PC market with a share of 19.3%, followed by HP in the second position.
