Remembering Intel's Andy Grove: "He built bridges of opportunity for thousands"

Here's Craig Barrett, former CEO of Intel, and his emotional tribute to Andy Grove, who helped build the company into the world's most valuable semiconductor manufacturer.

He spoke at the recent Silicon Valley Forum Visionary Awards that honored Grove and three others: Carl Bass, CEO Autodesk; Tom Wheeler, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and Jennifer Pahika, founder and Executive Director of Code for America.

Barrett said that Grove was an important mentor to himself, and to many others.

He read the poem: "The Bridge Builder" published in 1900 by female poet Will Allen Dromgoole.

Here is the final stanza from The Bridge Builder:

This chasm, that has been naught to me,

To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.

He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;

Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.

Grove was a Hungarian immigrant and narrowly escaped the Holocaust. He had to overcome many obstacles to success in the US.

Barrett said,"I appreciate all the bridges Andy built for me, and I know he built bridges for thousands, and thousands of people. That's how I want to remember Andy... building bridges of opportunity."
