Apple Pay gains over 20 more banks in the US, prepaid ‘boon. by Wirecard’ in the UK

iPhone SE Apple Pay

We’re now more than a year and a half out from the launch of Apple Pay — Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch-based mobile payment system — in the US, and we’re still seeing additional banks across the country regularly join the roster of participating partners. More than 20 new banks have added Apple Pay support in this round, and a new prepaid card launching in the UK today has also made the list. These are the latest banks to work with Apple Pay:

  • Arsenal Credit Union
  • Bank Midwest
  • Bank of Canton
  • Bank SNB
  • Bankers’ Bank
  • Bremer Bank N.A.
  • Bruning State Bank
  • Citizens Bank of Cumberland County
  • Fairfield County Bank
  • Family Horizons Credit Union
  • Firefighters First Credit Union
  • First National Bank Arcadia
  • First National Bank in Staunton
  • Fort Sill Federal Credit Union
  • HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union
  • IAA Credit Union
  • Moody National Bank
  • North East Texas Credit Union
  • Northbrook Bank & Trust Company
  • Northern United Federal Credit Union
  • Peoples State Bank of Munising
  • Redwood Capital Bank
  • Rogue Credit Union
  • Sierra Central Credit Union
  • TriStar Bank
  • Vermilion Bank

Exclusive to the UK for now is Apple Pay support for a new payment solution called boon. by Wirecard which is based on a prepaid digital MasterCard and launches today:

Wirecard today announced the UK launch of its new mobile payment solution, boon. Download the boon app and sign up to experience the easy, secure and private way to pay with Apple Pay. boon is based on an automatic app-to-wallet integration via a prepaid account with a digital MasterCard, issued by Wirecard Card Solutions.

Apple Pay expansion in the US and UK follows the addition of ANZ support in Australia last week, which marked the first bank to follow American Express support in the country. Apple Pay also expanded to Singapore two weeks back, bringing Apple’s mobile payment solution to a total of six countries around the world.

Here’s how to setup Apple Pay if your bank is supported (full list):

On the iPhone, just head to the Wallet app on iOS 9 and tap the plus (+) icon in the top right corner to begin, then follow the prompts. To add a debit card to the Apple Watch, go to the Apple Watch app on iPhone and look for the Wallet & Apple Pay section, then Add Credit or Debit Card section. iPads with Touch ID can use Apple Pay in apps; go to Settings then Wallet & Apple Pay to add your card there.

Apple Pay Contactless Payment LogoIf you’re looking for places to test out Apple Pay, Exxon Mobile recently added support for buying gas with Apple Pay through its SpeedPass+ app. Stores like the Apple Store, Best Buy, Whole Foods, and Walgreens all accept Apple Pay as payment at checkout, and McDonalds, Subway, and many restaurants through OpenTable accept Apple Pay payments as well. Apple also has a list of official partners here, and anywhere with the contactless payment logo at checkout should accept Apple Pay.

Apple Pay works with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, Apple Watch, iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, and both iPad Pro models. The new iPhone SE also features Apple Pay, which is a first for the 4-inch iPhone class.

How about more retailer support? Number of bank support doesn’t mean a thing if the number of retailers accepting Apple Pay is still limited.

    • It does mean a thing if a year and a half later your bank still doesn’t support Apple Pay. =P Like mine.

        Not really. Apple Pay.
If s store accepts contactless it supports Apple Pay. If it doesn’t have a Apple Pay logo on it but has the contactless symble then you can use Apple Pay. In the uk. We already had a lot of contactless shops. So when
Apple Pay came out. No one needed to do anything because it just works like any card that you tap

I understand but my bank was supported soon after launch. It gets very tiresome that more banks vs stores are added.

Support at retailers is growing. I couple weeks ago Raley’s SuperMarkets started supporting ApplePay. The Logo is showing up on their new Terminals now, and it works. It works at Mountain Mikes Pizza, Pizza Hut, Food-4-Less, Subway, Best Buy, etc. These are some of the places I’ve used it. I always give it a try and see if it works and in case of the 2 pizza places, surprised them when it worked. They are all, “I don’t think that works here.” and BAM it did!!! Other places have announced support like Home Depot. We all would like it to happen overnight. You know how long it took just to get card scanners in all the businesses from having to use carbon paper and a roller machine, quite a few YEARS!!!

Just signed up to Boon. and received £5 free credit to spend! Awesome :D

  3. Interesting. If Wirecard is on board, maybe Holvi follows since their MasterCard is issued by Wirecard UK.

I don’t know about other countries, but for UK …

Totally understand why Apple had to bring in the banks first, but this aspect is now getting there.

What we need now is more merchants offering full on Apple-Pay. We currently have reasonable coverage on the merchants accepting via contactless technology – machines intended for the contactless credit/debit cards – but this is limited to £30. We need more taking the full Apple-Pay, with the payment amount limited only by your available funds. I saw my first petrol (gas) station taking Apple-Pay the other day, but needs a lot more. I like the convenience and security of Apple-Pay and would love to use it in more places.

Hopefully the next step in Apple’s strategy is the merchants.

  5. I just got my iPhone SE, and every DAY I am seeking out places to use Apple Pay and asking the employees and informing them about it.

Hopefully Taiwan will be the next country to support Apple Pay.
A public hearing was held by the government last week regarding to TSP should be domestic or not.

Interesting that with the Boon card, europeans in other countries are taking advantage of it. French, Dutch, Germans have reported being able to set it up. It’s hard to tell the difference of consumers with a prepaid card.

The retailer support is growing, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin Donuts in app and in stores, Cold Stone Creamery, Jersey Mikes, Chick Fil-A in app and in stores, Exxon Mobil in Speed Pass app, Advance Auto Parts, plus Target saying that they are working on it. Of course, this is not enough for everyone. Some people will want 100% penetration before they consider it, but it is definitely growing.
