Apple’s PC Revenue Fell in Fiscal 2Q16, but Its Market Share Rose

Mac revenue fell 9% YoY

Apple (AAPL) saw a 9% YoY (year-over-year) fall in its Mac revenue. Its revenue in this business segment fell to $5.1 billion in fiscal 2Q16 from $5.6 billion in fiscal 2Q15. Unit shipments also fell 12% YoY to 4.0 million from 4.6 million in the same period.

According to market research company International Data Corporation (or IDC), Apple continued to increase its market share in the PC (personal computer) segment in 1Q16. Most Windows (MSFT) manufacturers suffered setbacks in the quarter ended March 31, 2016.

According to IDC, Apple’s share in the PC market rose to 7.4% in 1Q16 from 6.7% in 1Q15. It was driven by solid growth in North America, making it the fourth-largest PC manufacturer in the world.

Other major players

China’s (FXI) Lenovo (LNVGY) saw its PC shipments fall 8.5% YoY to 12.1 million units. Lenovo accounted for 20% of the overall market. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) was in second place, with a 19.2% market share and shipments of 11.6 million units. Dell remained the third-largest manufacturer, with PC shipments of 9 million units and a 14.9% share.

Apple increased its US market share to 13% in 1Q16 from 11.6% in 1Q15. Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo are the other top players in this region, with shares of 25.6%, 25.3%, and 14.1%, respectively, as of the end of 1Q16.

Apple’s shipments in North America rose 5.6% to 1.8 million units in fiscal 1Q16. The PC market has been falling in the last few quarters. Last year, PC global shipments fell below their 2008 levels to 300 million units.
