We already know that Redstone will come with significant improvements for the built-in apps and the user experience and one of the planned updates includes a major overall of the built-in Photos tool.

Windows 10 comes with a new image viewer called Photos that’s offered as a universal app on PCs and smartphones, and Microsoft now plans to introduce several new features with the Redstone update coming this summer.

A report by WinBeta indicates that the Photos app could receive several new features in the upcoming update, including a facial recognition system that would help users better categorize their images.

Specifically, what Microsoft’s trying to do is give customers more reasons to use the Photos app as the default image viewer and organization software in Windows 10. The facial recognition system will automatically scan people’s faces and based on information provided by you during an initial set-up, the app will then create categories that are specifically showing select persons.

Geotagging and new image editing tools

At the same time, the Photos app will be able to group folders based on locations, as geotagging will become a key feature with the upcoming update.

Editing features will also be added, including new filters, which should help bring the Windows 10 Mobile version in line with the other photo editing apps that are available on smartphones powered by Android and iOS.

And the very same update is also supposed to bring the mobile version of the Photos app in sync with the PC flavor, as the two are currently slightly difference and some features are only available on desktop computers.

The Redstone update is projected to launch in the summer of this year, but should this Photos app update indeed be planned, expect a preview version to be rolled out to insiders in the coming months.
