Reeder 3 is here with Instapaper support, iOS 9 features and more

iOS Reading
November 25, 2015

The latest and greatest version of Reeder, the widely used and highly rated feed reader app for iOS, has arrived. And with Reeder 3, as the new version of the app is called, come a number of new features and enhancements.

New sync service and fonts

For starters, Reeder 3 introduces support for a new sync service in the form of the popular read-later app Instapaper, which you can use as an alternative or in addition to Readability, the read-later service that has long been supported by Reeder. After adding your Instapaper account to Reeder 3, you can access your Instapaper reading list right within Reeder and sync your read/unread states for your saved items.

Reeder 3 also brings about refinements throughout the app’s interface. Of particular note are the font options that are conveniently listed for easier selection in the display settings for the article viewer, including Times New Roman, Iowan, Palatino, Georgia, Avenir, Helvetica, and of course, the iOS 9 default San Francisco.

Features for iOS 9 and new iOS devices

Speaking of iOS 9, Reeder 3 also has at least a couple of features that are available only on the latest major version of Apple’s mobile operating system. There’s support for Safari View Controller for an in-app browsing experience that’s based on Apple’s proprietary Web browser, and support for the Slide Over and Split View multitasking modes on iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, and iPad Pro.

And speaking of the iPad Pro, Reeder 3 is also optimized for Apple’s recently released largest and most powerful tablet yet.

Furthermore, Reeder 3 works with 3D Touch on iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus to enable you to Peek and Pop to preview articles in the article list.

Smart folders

Reeder 3 also delivers improvements to smart folders, which were introduced with the release of Reeder 3 for Mac late last September. These include unread and starred counts for smart folders, the ability to hide smart folders in the unread/starred view if there are no unread/starred items, and a new Archive folder in the All items view mode, which shows read items only (i.e., no unread or starred items).

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 9.0 or later, Reeder 3 is available now as a free update or as a new $4.99 download.

Reeder has long been my feed reader app of choice on iOS, not least because of its spiffiness, speediness, and support for multiple sync and sharing services. And with the arrival of its latest major upgrade, there are even more reasons to keep using Reeder.
