Apple’s iMac Lineup Just Got Some Huge Upgrades

2 minute read

Apple’s iMac lineup is getting some pretty big upgrades.

First, the bigger 27-inch iMac models will now all ship with an ultra high-res 5K Retina display that Apple says can show more colors than before. The 27-inchers are also getting some internal spec boosts. They’ll start at $1,799.

But what if you want a smaller iMac with a stellar display? You’re in luck: Apple is bringing a 4K Retina display to the 21.5-inch iMac for the first time. That model will start at $1,499, though cheaper options with less impressive displays will still be available. The smaller iMacs are getting a speed increase, too.

The new iMac lineup comes with new accessories as well. There’s a new wireless keyboard and trackpad, as well as a new wireless mouse that recharges with the Lightning cable that iPhones use.

Apple’s new hardware should be available in the Apple Store this week. For the inside story on the creation of Apple’s latest computers, check out this exclusive at Backchannel:

There are many reasons why Apple is the world’s most valuable company. Tim Cook is celebrated as a supply chain Maester who has internalized the focus on innovation that his predecessor inculcated in the culture. Jony Ive has drawn global raves for making Apple a design icon. Its marketing and branding practices set industry standards. But a visit to the lab where its legacy products — computers — are made suggests another reason.

Sweating the details.
