Super Sharp review: simple physics make this game fun and challenging

Super Sharp 1

Finger-swiping games really stand out on touch-screen devices. Before smartphones, there really wasn’t such a thing. Now, slicing and dicing with your finger has become its own category.

Super Sharp is one such game, but it adds a nice physics-based mechanic to a minimalist puzzle that is quite entertaining. We’ve got a full game review of Super Sharp below. See if it is something you’d like.

Concept

Players must slice apart shapes so that they fall into a target zone. Cutting corners is necessary in this game. You may need to slide a piece over to the side in order to reach a target. As the levels increase, so does the difficulty. Slicing something in half may not do the trick.

Design

This is a very minimalist game. The background is solid and very colorful, while the shapes are usually black, white or red (though there are variations on the theme). When you drag your finger across the screen, a black-and-white line appears to show you where you will be slicing.

Gameplay

The point of the game is to get, at least, a tiny piece of a shape to hit its color-matched target. However much you slice up a shape doesn’t matter, as long as one portion of it falls to its target.

Swipe from one corner of a square to another to watch the top half slide off in one direction while it pushes the bottom half in the opposite. Slice platforms in half to see how they swing differently.

The difficulty comes with completing the puzzle under par. Some puzzles must be solved with one single swipe in order to earn a star. You must have a minimum number of stars in order to move onto the next world.

It is smart to test what happens when you swipe. You can easily restart the level by tapping the upper right corner. By repeating a puzzle again and again, you’ll get an idea for the right method to get a chunk of shape to hit its target.

There are different types of shapes. Some can’t be cut. Others float upward or downward. As the levels progress, you’ll be faced with moving shapes, swinging ropes, and a variety of objects that complicate your ability to win.

If a level is simply too hard, you can skip it. However, keep in mind that you will need a minimum number of stars in order to unlock a new world. So, you may need to go back and replay levels in order to earn enough stars.

The Good

This is a great little time waster. You can focus on trying to figure out how to solve a puzzle while on your lunch break without being too distracted from eating. The bite-sized levels keep your mind occupied, but don’t take up too much of your time.

The Bad

I’d love a hint system here. Some levels seem impossible to get through. It would be great if you could get a sneak peak at the right way to slice up the shapes.

Value

Super Sharp costs $1.99. This game might traditionally be thought of as a freebie with in-app purchases. I love that the developers decided it would be a premium title with no question about what you get with it. You get it all.

Conclusion

As simple mobile games go, this one sits on the good shelf. It is easy to pick up and play, but is complicated enough to make you want to come back and play again. It is available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Download it in the App Store today.
