Fantastical 2 for iOS gets multitasking, better Apple Watch support

Arguably the best calendar app for iOS just got better with multitasking support for the iPad and a Complication for the Apple Watch.

Fantastical 2 from Flexibits has long been a favorite calendar app for both iPhone and iPad. The unique views into a busy schedule are a quick window into the busy professional's day. A recent update has made the iPad app even better with support for multitasking that appeared in iOS 9. The iPhone app now supports 3D Touch and Complications on the Apple Watch.

There are other improvements that I'll touch on in a moment but the support for SlideOver and Split View on the iPad Air 2 are the major new features. The ability to quickly check the calendar and add a new event by sliding the Fantastical 2 panel from the right is a big convenience.

Split View is supported nicely, too. I often have Outlook running on the left to keep up with the flood of email I get, along with Fantastical 2 on the right of the screen. It is so nice to be able to see what's coming up in my busy schedule when I get an email asking for a meeting.

The app has supported the Apple Watch for a while but the new iPhone version brings welcome support for Complications on the watch. This puts schedule information right on the Apple Watch face, a very handy feature.

Unfortunately, Fantastical 2 is not a universal app so those using both an iPhone and an iPad will have to buy both versions of the app. The iPhone version is currently $4.99 and the app for iPad is $9.99. There is also an OS X app for a whopping $39.99, but I don't use that one.

Fantastical 2 works with the iOS calendars as expected, and also very nicely with Google Calendars. I use multiple calendars with the latter and everything works as desired. You can set any calendar to be the default, and turn off others you don't want cluttering up the view into the agenda.

On the iPhone Fantastical 2 now supports 3D Touch in the latest version. Activities such as creating a new event and searching are now just a touch away.

Fantastical 2 still has outstanding natural language input that has always set it apart from the crowd of calendar apps. Creating a new event is as easy as entering "Hair cut Thursday at 10:30", which puts it into the schedule.

Fantastical 2 is available in the iTunes App Store for $4.99 and $9.99 for the iPhone and iPad, respectively.
