Apple releases iTunes 12.2 update with Apple Music + Beats 1 support

iTunes 12.2

In addition to iOS 8.4 and OS X 10.10.4, Apple has released a new version of iTunes for Mac that brings Apple Music to the desktop. The update also supports streaming Apple’s new Beats 1 24/7 live radio station and includes a refreshed icon. In addition to the My Music, Playlists, Radio, and iTunes Store tabs under Music on iTunes, the new update also adds Apple Music’s new For You section for viewing music similar to your taste, a New section for promoting newly released material, and a Connect tab for following artist activity including sound clips, videos, and photos shared.

Beats Music subscribers migrating to Apple Music can move libraries and playlists to Apple Music using the latest version of the iOS app with current subscribers getting iTunes credit as well.

The latest version of iTunes is available through the Updates tab on the Mac App Store.

    Beats 1 doesn’t work…..

    • amine Bajeddi - 9 years ago

try using VPN, it depends on where you are located….beats 1 is now streaming on 100 countries only.

      • tmrjij718 - 9 years ago

I admired the way you said “100 countries only”

    • RGGnDFW (@yentrog31) - 9 years ago

On device or net? Til iTunes updates for all you can go to iTunes/radio/+ station/type in Beats 1. You can listen but won’t have all the graphics.

Aaargh! I lost my entire music library of 76,000 tracks somehow. I guess I’ll have to reload it.

    • Eduardo Cordero - 9 years ago

The same thing just happened to me..All my playlists and non Apple content (music, movies, ringtones) have been removed from ITunes. Files are still in the computer but WTF

    • You have to make sure iCloud Music Library is turned on in Settings > Music. On one of my iPhones I had to turn it off and back on.

  11. I got the screen to sign up for Apple Music, but when I clicked on “Already a member”, the “For You” tab disappeared entirely. I still have Radio and Connect tabs, but no For You. Help anyone?

  12. does anyone know if its possible to create playlists on apple music without adding the songs to my music. i DONT use iCloud and it seems that the only way to create playlists is if i turn it on which seems like a major oversight in my opinion, i love everything about apple music except this :(!

  13. App Store spinning round and round looking for updates…….

  14. Scott Morris - 9 years ago

You gotta love apple now that they pushed this update now I have more bugs then before the update. When is apple going to get their act together and test their software. I mean common it is not like they have ten thousand different configs to deal with. Does anyone else have issues with bluetooth after this update just curious.

    • lkrupp215 - 9 years ago

Technology craps on certain people. You must be one of them. Everything working perfectly. Apple has their act together for sure. This launch has been close to perfect. I updated my iPhone 6 in less than 20 minutes. I updated my iMac to Yosemite 10,10.4 without issues. And finally I updated to iTunes 12.2 and it all just works. All on the very day of release. No congested server problems, no delays, no crashes.

    • I can’t get Beats 1 Radio to work with my bluetooth now actually. Everything else works fine.

  15. createoffshorecompany - 9 years ago

Not sure whether it’s not working in Panama or whether it’s a problem with El Capitan – I don’t see it and on the apple.com page it says that 12.2 will be available soon. Also, on iOS 9 I don’t see any of the new stuff.

    • createoffshorecompany - 9 years ago

Yerp…and of course the second I posted it became available :-) Downloading now

  16. When I click on a link to “View in Apple Music” iTunes 12.2 opens on my Mac, then an alert “Update Required Apple Music requires iTunes 12.2 or later…” with a cancel and Upgrade button. So frustrating!

  17. gigglybeast - 9 years ago

Good God, is this update not doing anything other than this streaming music crap. I know some people will like it, but 9 to 5 Mac, do you have to have the first 3 articles on your site devoted to essentially the same subject? What else does the update bring for those of us who couldnt care less about iTunes or Beats or whatever music service apple is trying to sell us?

    • Avenged110 - 9 years ago

The album grid view is much tighter with less white space (looks *much* better since they disappointingly removed the shadows in 12.0), scrolling frame rates and UI performance are dramatically improved, the app is once again able to cache my whole library in albums view (about 625) like iTunes 11 did without having to reload artwork while scrolling, the downloads window is now a popover like Safari, there’s a setting to share the iTunes XML file with other apps and for iTunes Match in settings, and thankfully Apple gave us a way to disable each and every piece of Apple Music. Actually a very nice update and what I feel should have been released as iTunes 12.0.

    • Avenged110 - 9 years ago

I would have liked to have seen other actual updates covered as well. Also, I missed one. In settings you can choose to use the new heart (“love”) system as the primary rating system or in tandem with the usual stars.

  18. Spurgeon Washing - 9 years ago

Can someone tell me what happens to ITUNES Match. I already paying for it. Does it just go away? Does all my music still sit in the cloud?

  19. Robert Thomson - 9 years ago

If you have El Capitan beta download iTunes 12.2 separately and it will install. Now if I could just get something for IOS 9 beta.

  20. mjmj666 - 9 years ago

Where is the Airplay control panel?

    • ryanericksen - 9 years ago

It disappears when you stream Beats1, but reappears when you stream the other stations and/or your personal music.

    • Brian Batch - 9 years ago

WTF?? I can’t use Airplay with Beats 1 on my Mac??

      • Beto Galetto - 9 years ago

Just found out that too. Sucks. Using Airfoil to bypass this limitation.

  21. proudinfidelusmc - 9 years ago

I’m surprised by Beats 1 music selection, most of it seems to be great actually so far.
I’m still happy with the other “stations” though, I still get to listen to great music from what used to be iTunes Radio. If you recognize the artists I have as favorites, we’d probably get along great! :)

Important for 9to5mac people: there are several threads on the Apple Support Forums detailing a pretty major issue with this update. When I updated and turned on Apple Music (which I had already begun using on my iPhone earlier in the day), iTunes seemed to be okay. There were a lot of usability / UX “issues” but they were pretty minor. After a while I started noticing that it was kinda f****g up all the metadata. I’d click on an album, but it would include tracks from different albums. Sometimes the album art would get switched. I force quit and reopened and the issues persist. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any method to this madness, and sometimes the metadata change will revert after restarting iTunes. But update at your own risk.

    • AeronPeryton - 9 years ago

There’s something to be said about people who rip their own CDs and properly tag everything and something to be said about people who have two pieces of album art across 3,000 songs of which the files were originally named “Copy of Copy of JAYZ (New album) – Track 3 (NOT FAKE).mp3”.

  23. Update worked on me on the first try.

  24. Scott Stevenson - 9 years ago

Update when through completely fine but with in a couple of hours my iPhone 6 completely crashed, will not turn on even when plugged in. Thoughts?

  25. Gregg Palmer - 9 years ago

How do you create a new station based on a song or band?

    • AeronPeryton - 9 years ago

Play that song or a song by that group, then touch the three dots (…), then touch Start Station.

      • steves910 - 9 years ago

What if I wanted to create a new station from a song/album/artist that I do not have in my library? Is that even possible with this update?

  26. sewollef - 9 years ago

Of course I should know better than update on the first day of release.

But no, after the 10.10.4 / iTunes 12.2 update I no longer have any playlists and most of the albums Iv’e bought in the last 3 months or so have also disappeared. The update seems to have trashed my iTunes Music Library.xml file, since t it is no longer in my iTunes folder.

One day I’ll learn. But yesterday wasn’t that day.

  27. On update, Apple deletes all your playlists and you have to download all your iTunes music again. Not pretty.

  28. Joe Arnold - 9 years ago

Downloaded the new update. After restarting, my entire music library was wiped out and all of the playlists were gone. Has anyone figured out a fix for this yet? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  29. Lorann Pederson - 9 years ago

1 in 10 of my songs will play and NONE of my radio stations will play – they’re there but it gives: “Cannot open – THIS MEDIA FORMAT IS NOT SUPPORTED” error – WTF?

  30. Bridgette Orozco - 9 years ago

beats 1 radio station doesn’t work for me on my mac but it does on my iPad. anyone else having that problem?

  31. Barry Shatswell - 9 years ago

What if I don’t want Beats? I really was not at all impressed, nor pleased that I must have certain apps on my iPhones when Apple came out with the Apple Watch and many other features that are simply of no interest to me. I would must prefer the new features are options that are automatically OFF, and are turned on by the consumer.

  32. Barry Shatswell - 9 years ago

One last item. How do I let Apple know that the “Cloud” options and Internet connectivity must be an option and not a requirement? Neither are wanted all the time and certainly do no work everywhere, which pretty much renders the ecosystem useless.

  33. jonchamps - 9 years ago

The iTunes update, along with 10.10.4 for OS X was for many, me included, an App Store Fiasco of the very highest order. Looped install/not installed software that required a download from a separate page Apple post for updates that stay permanently away rom App Store. If you’re in the UK and you eventually get the software updated (a 3 hour fiasco in my case on a brand new iMac27″ top spec), the radio on iTunes? Well welcome to inane drivel from loud mouthed know it all DJ’s – clearly anyone over 24 isn’t in the demographic. As for the stations? None of them play except for BBC World Service, which sits incongruously in the middle of “on The Floor” and “Workout Anthems”. Really much as love my Mac and iPhone and Watch, this isn’t the polished, “it just works” Apple we all came to love

  34. Wayne Fritzsche - 9 years ago

I have it and it really STINKS. If I select an album it won’t play through the entire album. there are no check marks, nothing. If I want to play all of Rumors (Fleetwood Mac), I can’t just select that album and have it play all the tracks. It will play one song then stop (before I figured out to turn off shuffle, I would go from Fleetwood Mac to Beethoven’s 5th (second movement no less).

  35. Katie Reff - 9 years ago

I am still running Mavericks and have issues with skipping to the middle of songs. I was going to update to Yosemite, but there seems to be issues with that as well. Some have had their libraries wiped out after upgrade. The new update 12.2.1.16 has not fixed this issue. I am more concerned about my own recorded music and usability for output sound checks, then the streaming music option. Is it safe to upgrade to Yosemite? It all seems sort of beta to me.

  36. k m (@nyctenor) - 9 years ago

BE VERY CAREFUL. If you have ripped many CD’s from your collection (purchased on CDS) and have them in separate folders with tracks in order, this software update will obliterate EVERYTHING in your iTunes music folder and place tracks in random positions throughout the hard drive. It WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU TO RE-CONSTRUCT ANY CAREFULLY constructed library to it’s original state, except using Time Machine, and even that is clearly not obvious how to do this…..This is a major FAIL on the part of Apple. Not EVERYONE buys all their music on iTunes. Furthermore I had music i had purchased on Amazon digital and all those tracks are GONE!

  37. Katie Reff - 9 years ago

12.2. destroyed my iTunes and the other update to garageband (11) also ruined the code for output levels. I am a very angry person. They are awful quiet about all those that had their libraries destroyed, and the skipping, popping and crackling on any song in one’s existing library. I am going to be looking for an alternative if this isn’t fixed soon.

  38. Gio Pippo - 9 years ago

After upgrading to iTune 12.2.0.145 my WHOLE music folder was wiped out. 50 Gb of music erased and years of libraries constructed with care gone. Only left was a fresh installation of iTune. This is beyond ridiculous. Bye bye iTune. I will uninstall from all my devices.
