Apple Store in Upper East Side of Manhattan Opens June 13

Apple overnight added signage to its upcoming retail location in the Upper East Side of Manhattan that confirms the store will open on June 13. The new store will be located at 940 Madison Avenue, on the corner of 74th Street, and remains under construction ahead of opening. The new store will be Apple's seventh retail location in New York City alongside Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, SoHo, Upper West Side, West 14th Street and Staten Island stores.

Apple updated its retail store list today to reflect the new Upper East Side location, with store hours listed as 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern on Monday through Saturday and 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern on Sunday. Apple likely opted for earlier closing times than some other New York City locations to please Upper East Side residents that have voiced their opposition against the store and large crowds that it could attract.

The upcoming store at 940 Madison Avenue will occupy a former banking complex built in 1921 that most recently housed luxury retailer VBH. The building itself offers a large amount of space, featuring a 4,000 square-foot ground level and 1,000 square-foot mezzanine. Apple leased the building nearly one year ago and the site has been under renovation since at least October 2014.

geez, you think there would be enough stores in NYC already.

Extremely high population density, especially during working hours, and 100% foot traffic makes both the economics and dynamic completely different from your area. The daytime population density of Manhattan is over 170,000 people per sq. mi! With well-above US average incomes. Those NYC stores have been gold mines.

Manhattan has enough stores. They need more in the other boroughs and Long Island.

Funny. This was a Chemical Bank when I moved here in 1996 (Chemical was later bought out by Chase). Guess the building will start holding my money again starting next month.

You clearly are not a New Yorker: the Apple Upper West Side store (AFAIK the largest in NYC, with the largest staff) which I go to frequently is so jam-packed it isn't funny; it takes a minimum of 2-3 days to schedule a genius appointment, I went to help a friend get an iPhone in *January* on a weekday and we had to wait for hours.

Apple needs to open a number of additional stores in NYC to restore some sanity. Wall St. is another obvious place for a store, and there are entire boroughs like Queens without a single store.

Absolutely in the Wall Street Area

I totally agree that Apple needs a presence down in the heart of the financial area. We're talking people who make very good money working here that would't mind walking to an Apple store, especially during their lunch break, rather than having to wait until after work, taking public transportation & fighting massive crowds in the SoHo or Grand Central stores! Ka-ching, Apple.

I'm not sure how the earlier closing times help the residents. Apple stores tend to be more problematic at opening times when there are major new intros, occasionally including overnight lines.

The residents in the area, specifically those west of lex, don't want poors around after dark.
