You've heard of diving for pearls, but what about plunging into to the sea to find an Apple?

That's what one boat captain was forced to do after his passenger's iPhone 5 fell into the sea.

Gregory Papadin, from San Diego, California, was playing in the ocean when his smartphone decided to go deep sea diving.

"My brother tried throwing my phone to me, " he said.

"It ended up going straight under water and sank to bottom of the ocean floor.

"Luckily, it ended with the camera up and recorded the whole thing."

The resulting video reminds us of a near death experience, showing strange beings swimming overhead and a light shining in the distance.

But luckily for Gregory, his iPhone wasn't sent on a one way trip to the great Apple Store in the sky.

"The underwater pressure was too much for both my brother and I to swim and get it," he added.

"But the owner of the boat we rented was able to reduce the pressure using a special breathing method meant for diving.

"He was able to retrieve it, and my phone managed to survive the whole ordeal."
