Apple's newly-promoted Chief Design Officer, Jony Ive, was born in Chingford, on the border between London and Essex, in February 1967.
He went to the same school as David Beckham, before going on to Newcastle Polytechnic, where he studied industrial design.
After graduation, he worked for a design start-up in London and began consulting for one of his clients – Apple.
In 1992, he became a full-time member of staff at Apple and moved to the US.
"I remember the first time I saw an Apple product," he recalled in a 2008 interview.
"I remember it so clearly because it was the first time I realised that when I saw this product, I got a very clear sense of the people that designed it and made it.
"A big definition of who you are as a designer is the way that you look at the world, and I guess that one of the sort of curses of what you do is that you're constantly looking at something and thinking, 'why is it like that and not like this?'"
Ive has led Apple's design team since 1996 and has been a key player in the development of the company's most iconic products, from iMacs to iPhones, iPads to the Apple Watch.
He was very close to his late boss Steve Jobs, describing him as his "best and most loyal friend".
The current Apple CEO, Tim Cook, believes that Ive is "one of the most talented and accomplished designers of his generation," and his new role is expected to involve designing Apple's stores as well as its products.
