Although the Apple Watch has already received positive reviews, the company still needs to accomplish one feat for it to be as successful as its other products, Ron Johnson said Wednesday.

"The real job of Apple … is to get people to fall in love with the product [and] to understand how to use it," J.C. Penney's former chief executive told CNBC's "Squawk Alley."

"If you can get those first people to buy the watch … and fall in love and show their friends, then it will take off," Johnson added.

Still, some of the wearable's early adopters have experienced certain setbacks.

Last week, Apple Watch owners with tattoos found that their inked skin confuses the sensors on the underside of the device. This led to many users taking to social media and air their frustration under the hashtag #tattoogate.

The company also reportedly found defects in one of the watch's components, leading it to limit the device's availability.

Nevertheless, Apple's stock remains up nearly 13 percent this year and over 45 percent in the last 12 months. Click here to see where the stock is trading now.
