Create a new book in iBooks Author with the same look and feel of one you created previously

Learn how to create a template, give your book a new internal ID, or duplicate your book as a new one.

If you duplicate an existing book using File > Duplicate or by creating a copy of your book in Finder, the duplicate is considered the same book as the original by the iBooks Store. If you submit the duplicate to the iBooks Store, it will be treated as an update to the existing book.

To create a unique book with the same look and feel of a previous book that the iBooks Store will treat as new, use one of the three methods below:

Create a template

If you want to reuse the look and feel of a book, create a template from your original:

  1. Open your book in iBooks Author.

  2. From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose File > Save as Template. The template is added to the Template Chooser.

When you want to use the template:

  1. Open iBooks Author.

  2. From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose File > New from Template Chooser.

  3. Choose your new template.

Give your book a new internal ID

  1. Open your book in iBooks Author.

  2. From the menu at the top of your computer screen, choose File > Reset for iBooks Store.

Reset for iBooks Store gives the book you’re working on a new internal ID (GUID). When you submit the book to the iBooks Store, it's associated with a unique store ID (asset ID).

When you choose to reset, a message appears asking if you're sure that you want to reset your book:

  • Click Reset to continue.

  • Click Cancel to cancel.

  • Click Learn More to open this article.

There is no visual confirmation that the internal ID updated.

Duplicate your book as a new book

  1. Open your book in iBooks Author.

  2. Hold down the Option key on your keyboard.

  3. From the menu at the top of your computer screen, choose File > Duplicate as New Book.

Duplicate as New Book duplicates the book you're working on. The duplicate has a unique internal ID (GUID). When you submit the book to the iBooks Store, it’s associated with a unique store ID (asset ID).

Difference between reset and duplicate

"Reset for iBooks Store" updates the current book.

"Duplicate as New Book" creates an updated duplicate while leaving the current book as-is.

If you choose File > Duplicate, your book will be copied without updating the internal ID. If you previously published the book, when you submit the duplicate to the iBooks Store, it publishes as an update to an existing book instead of a new one.
