Worldwide Developers Conference is an annual event Apple hosts to teach third-party developers best practices for app design, and offer previews of upcoming OS X and iOS versions. Apple also brings about 1,000 of its own engineers so developers who are available to conference attendees.

The event is so popular that tickets were selling out within the first few minutes of availability. To make the purchase process more fair, Apple has been trying different ways of managing the demand. This year, the company tried a lottery system where developers signed up and were randomly selected.

Developers who won the lottery selection were charged US$1,599 for their multi-day pass. WWDC runs from June 8 through June 12 at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco.
