uNu DX-6 iPhone 6 Charging Case Review: Power When You Need It Most

Following
This article is more than 9 years old.

We've all been there; you're on your way home from work or need to make call and as soon as you bring your smartphone out of standby, its battery dies. Remembering to charge your smartphone is something we call forget to do from time to time, but companies such as uNu offer battery cases that can offer us a lifeline in these situations.

It's latest case, the DX-6, is exclusively for Apple's iPhone 6 and offers a full protective case, which comes equipped with its own internal battery. This can be powered up so you can charge your iPhone 6 on the move if you're running low on power.

The DX-6's battery is indicated as being rated at 3,000mAh capacity. The iPhone 6's battery stands at 1,810 mAh so this should mean that you can charge your iPhone 6 from flat to full charge, and again from flat to around 25% depending on the conditions.

In other words, the DX-6 more than doubles your battery life, meaning that if you find your iPhone 6 lasts around a day at the moment, you'll likely last two or even three days without having to charge it.

At nearly 15mm thick, the case nearly doubles the thickness of the iPhone 6 alone, although uNu does offer a thinner version with reduced capacity. However, while this does add bulk in your pocket, it's certainly manageable on a  daily basis, plus it also makes the super-skinner iPhone 6 a  little easier to hold too.

My favorite iPhone 6 battery case so far is Lenmar's Maven (see my review of it here), and the DX-6 is very similar. They're practically the same size give or take a millimeter or two here and there, and both weigh 97 grams. They also both sport a headphone jack pass-through hole that's 6.4mm wide, allowing most 3.5mm jacks to pass through without needing to the included extender - my  Soundmagic E10's were fine for example.

The only real difference is the aesthetics and I still prefer the Maven case here. It's smoother and nicer to hold and the battery level indicator is a little more intuitive too. The DX-6 has a single LED that changes color depending on the charge level, while the Lenmar case has a multi-section light that's a bit more appealing.

Both cases use a micro-USB port for charging and include a cable for this too, while you can also sync with iTunes without removing your iPhone 6.

They each allow full access to the iPhone 6's buttons, but again, the Lenmar case has slightly easier access here. Slotting your iPhone 6 into place is just as easy on each device - you just remove the top section of the case and it slides straight in.

The capacity proved to be right on the money too. The case charged my iPhone 6 from flat to 100%, then back up to 113% - almost identical to the Lenmar case. This was with the iPhone powered on to access the charge - if you have yours powered off, you'll likely see even more.

Price-wise, though, the DX-6 only costs $69.99, whereas the Maven currently costs $79.99. For occasional or emergency use, you may as well save some cash and opt for the DX-6, however for regular users I'd be tempted to spend the extra for the Lenmar Maven.
