Ever wondered what your favorite movies and shows would be like if the characters had iPhones?

The work of French photographer François Dourlen sort of touches on that subject, but with a subversive, whimsical twist that sees characters like Die Hard’s John McClane crawling out of microwave ovens, or the Eye of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings movies topping an industrial tower.

Dourlen is a French teacher and amateur photographer who whimsically incorporates famous video game characters, movie stars, and superheroes into his work. In his iPhone series, though, he uses an iPhone to bring characters into the real world, often in humorous contexts.

Dourlen’s technique is simple. He just pulls out his iPhone, pulls up an image on Google Image search, and then tries to shoot the combined image with his regular camera. Using this technique, Dourlen is able to show Thor using Mjolnir to hammer in a tiny nail, transform Edward Scissorhands into a sous chef, but Justin Bieber’s face on a toddler’s body (which, come to think of it, might just describe Justin Bieber, full stop), and more.

If you like the photos you see on this page, make sure to check out Dourlen’s official site for more. His work is like a humorous combination of photography and augmented reality, and some of his juxtapositions are real knee-slappers. Check it out.
