FIRST LOOK: Michael Fassbender as Steve Jobs on the set of the controversial new film about the Apple co-founder's life

It was just confirmed that Michael Fassbender will be portraying Steve Jobs in a new biopic.

And fans got a first glimpse of the Irishman on set of the film in a neighbouring town near San Francisco and the tech mecca of Silicon Valley.

The 37-year-old looked to be fully embodying the Apple founder and innovator on Friday as he sported the shoulder length hair that Jobs wore during the 1980s.

The actor looked pensive as he donned the white shirt, high-waisted slacks, brown suede shoes and long haired look of the tech idol.

The movie is being filmed in San Francisco and is directed by Danny Boyle, and co-stars Seth Rogen and Kate Winslet.

The movie has had a tumultuous birth, going through a long list of directors and actors before settling on the current line-up, with most of the behind the scenes turmoil spilling out into the public domain during last year's infamous hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

The rights for the book on which the film is based, Walter Isaacson's biography Steve Jobs, was initially purchased by Sony, with David Fincher tipped to direct, and Christian Bale set to play the eponymous lead.

Thus started a revolving door of actors and directors being pulling in and out of the project, with George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson being attached at one point or another.

When all Sony's private emails were leaked online during the hack connected to the comedy The Interview, it emerged that part of the upheaval was because Angelina Jolie reportedly tried to lure David Fincher away from the project to direct her in another biopic instead, of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra.

Another spoke in the wheel was the release of another film about Steve Jobs called Jobs, with Ashton Kutcher in the lead role.

Ultimately, Sony pulled the plug and Universal will now distribute the film, which has been adapted by Aaron Sorkin, of The West Wing and The Social Network fame.

It is understood that the movie will run more like a play, with three 30 minute scenes played out in real time. Each will detail a launch of a major Apple product: the Macintosh in 1984, NeXT in 1988, and the iPod in 2001.
