The iPhone has gotten considerably better over the years, but which iPhone is the loudest?
iClarified ran the numbers in a recent video, in which a decibel meter was placed beneath the speaker of every Apple handset so far while they played sound at maximum volume.
By and large, the list is as you would expect — with the newer iPhone 6 generation devices (around 105 dBA) being considerably louder than the original iPhone 2G, (94.3 dBA) for instance. There are a few intriguing discoveries, however. For example, 2010’s iPhone 4 (92.9 dBA) is the quietest iPhone Apple has made, while the iPhone 6 (105.4 dBA) is slightly louder than its plus-sized sibling the iPhone 6 Plus (105.0 dBA).
Check out the video — and the complete results — below.
The complete list of iPhone sound levels are as follows:
iPhone 2G: 94.3 dBA
iPhone 3G: 98.6 dBA
iPhone 3GS: 103.6 dBA
iPhone 4: 92.9 dBA
iPhone 4S: 101.1 dBA
iPhone 5: 104.0 dBA
iPhone 5C: 102.0 dBA
iPhone 5S: 103.6 dBA
iPhone 6: 105.4 dBA
iPhone 6 Plus: 105.0 dBA
While a louder iPhone is better most of the time, that’s not always the case. As the Daily Mail points out, the World Health Organization says exposure to high noise levels can disturb sleep, raise blood pressure and even increase the chances of heart disease. Increased risk of a heart attack is certainly a steep punishment for upgrading from your ancient iPhone 4 to a shiny new Apple phablet.
We’d also be interested to see some comparison of sound quality, and also headphone output — since that is how the majority of people likely listen to music on their iPhones.
This isn’t the first test we’ve seen pitting every iPhone against one another. A recent speed test put every iPhone model from the original through the 6 Plus through its paces. Check it out below:
