The Intel Edison module is built around a dual-core, dual-threaded 500MHz Intel Atom CPU and a 100MHz 32-bit Intel Quark microcontroller.

“The Intel Edison platform represents an important advance among ready-to-use compute platforms available today,” said Simon Duggleby, semiconductor category marketing manager at RS Components. “With its small dimensions and wireless connectivity.”

The Edison module has a breakout board for its 1.8V I/Os with a USB Micro Type-AB connector.

The board for Arduino is hardware and software pin-compatible with Arduino shields designed for the Uno R3. The board provides important connections in the same locations as on the Arduino Uno R3, and also has a Micro SD card connector as well as micro and standard-size USB connectors.

The Intel Edison development platform comes with Yocto Linux v1.6 OS support, and allows development with Arduino and C/C++.

Further support, including Node.JS, Python, RTOS, and Visual Programming will be added in the future. The platform is compatible with Arduino IDE, Eclipse, and Intel XDK development environments.
