Google settles patent case with Microsoft, Apple consortium

Google has agreed to settle a dispute with the Rockstar patent consortium, that includes Microsoft and Apple among its members. The legal dispute was related to patents which were, according to Rockstar, infringed upon by Google’s Android OS.

Rockstar acquired numerous patents and intellectual property from Nortel, and used those patents last year to sue Google, Samsung and other manufacturers that were using the search giant’s Android OS for their handsets.

While the legal battle has dragged on, both parties seem to have come to some sort of an agreement right now and according to a filing in a Texas federal court, they’ve agreed to settle “all matters in controversy between the parties”. It’s not clear if this deal extends to other OEMs or is just restricted to Google, nor what the terms of settlement are.

Google is also fighting Rockstar in a different court case, this time in California with the search company looking to invalidate the consortium’s patents.

With this settlement Google has bought itself some time while the California care moves along and who knows the company may yet emerge victorious in the end.
