Twitpic to Shut Down on Oct 25 After Failed Buyout Effort

Twitpic, the Twitter-based online photo sharing service, will be shutting down on October 25 following a failed move to find a buyer for the company. Twitpic chose to close its business after the social network service Twitter threatened legal action over what it saw as a trademark violation in the company's name.

Twitpic originally said it would close on September 25, but delayed when the possibility of a buyer for the company came into play. In the end, a deal couldn't be reached with any buyer, so Twitpic is packing up and going home.

The company said on its blog,

We worked through a handful of potential acquirers and exhausted all potential options. We were almost certain we had found a new home for Twitpic, but agreeable terms could not be met.

Twitpic's founders said the company didn't have the legal resources to fight Twitter over the trademark violation claim, so instead of coming up with a new name, they chose a more terminal option.

People that used the service can download their photos through Twitpic's export tool in account settings. You have until October 25 to export your content, or it'll be lost forever.
