HACKETTSTOWN – Police caught the person who stole a new iPhone 6 by using an application the victim installed on the smart phone.

Police received a report at about 5:10 p.m. Wednesday that a Hackettstown High School student had his iPhone 6 stolen, valued at $648.99.

Police determined the 15-year-old student had the phone stolen from his backpack in a locker.

The student's parent then used the "Find My iPhone" application that was installed on the phone, designed to locate the phone if it is missing.

The app showed the missing phone was last "pinged," or used, at a residence in Independence Twp.

Police responded to the Independence residence and a 15-year-old male resident of the home admitted to stealing the iPhone 6.

The phone was then returned to the owner.

The 15-year-old boy was charged with third-degree theft and released pending a court appearance.
