PSA for parents: Apple recommending inappropriate apps for kids due to App Store bug

If you use the Kids sections in the App Store for finding appropriate apps for children, you might want to be careful until Apple fixes a bug that’s currently displaying the wrong apps for kids. Specifically, the “Kids” category under the App Store’s Top Charts section is currently displaying apps that should go in the main “All Categories” section. That means that the All Kids, Kids 5 & Under, Kids 6-8, and Kids 9-11 categories are currently displaying many apps that are inappropriate for kids (pictured above).

The bug appears to be iOS 8 only, and is present in App Stores in at least the US, Canada, and Germany. Reader and developers at Happy-Touch informed us of the  issue, which we confirmed on an iOS device in the Canadian and US App Stores. Apple is aware of the bug.

Not an issue in the Japanese App Store. iOS 8.0.2 on a 5S.

Kids gotta learn to date and gamble eventually right?

  5. What the shit is going on in Cupertino? It’s like that bus-full of folks that went looking for names for OSX brought back a busload of something that’s got everyone a little off-track… Not during work guys!

Not trying to make excuses but they are making huge leaps forward and I’m not surprised there’s a few bumps in the road. iOS 8 is probably the biggest advancement since iPhone OS 2 and the App Store (2008). Yosemite is the big UI overhaul people have been clamoring about for 6 years. Apple’s software team has been absolutely prolific this year with Metal, HealthKit, HomeKit, and Swift. And I’m sure they’re working on Watch OS too now.

I’m just saying, every aspect of Apple software is getting major upgrades in 2014. Bugs like this or 8.0.1 are embarrassing but relatively minor issues for what has been a fantastic year.

        Pathetic.
If I heard an excuse like that at work I’d fire the guy.

Fact is, Apple’s quality control isn’t what it used to be.

      • I mean I agree to an extent, I’m a huge Apple fan, but, I mean, how does that even happen? And like another poster commented below Apple is still better than anything else even at their worst. But, seriously. How did that happen? It has nothing to so with Swift or Homekit or anything like that. It’s just bizarre.

Okay, it appears as though Apple is losing its touch. Fortunately, Apple minus its touch is still significantly better than ANYTHING ELSE. And just imagine “Daddy, I just spent $564.84 on casino tokens :-/ “
