Report claims Apple will hold Oct. 21 event for new iPads and Yosemite (Updated)

According to a report from Micah Singleton at The Daily Dot, Apple is planning to hold its next press event on October 21. The date lines up with our report of a late October release for Yosemite from July and adds that Apple will use the event to unveil two new iPad models:

Apple plans to unveil the sixth generation of its iPad and the third edition of iPad mini during the event.

In addition to the a new iPad and iPad mini models reportedly set to make an appearance at the event, the report claims that Apple will release OS X Yosemite on the day of the event.

Apple has held late October events for the last two years including an event on October 22 last year and on October 23 the year before, both of which were used to unveil new iPad models and OS X related announcements. At last year’s event, Apple announced the iPad Air alongside a new iPad mini with Retina display and also introduced the new Mac Pro and updated MacBook Pro models. We’ve reported on several rumors in recent months regarding new iPad models including an iPad Air with updated internals and a larger 12.9-inch iPad Apple is reportedly planning to release early next year.

Back in July, we reported that Apple has also been working on a 4K desktop in addition to a new 12-inch MacBook.

Update: The close-to-Apple Jim Dalrymple says not so fast on October 21st.

  1. hmm i wish they would wait a while more, so we can have iOS 8.1 by the time the new iPads are introduced
they used to introduce new iOS versions with new products, now they rush so many products in just a little space of time that it’s just not possible to do so

    iPod Touch 6G too maybe?

  3. Toro Volt (@torovolt) - 10 years ago

Wow no new iPod Touch? I hope they come with an iPad nano instead cos I’m not buying an iPhone.

    • Sherwin Zadeh - 10 years ago

They are — it’s called the Apple Watch.
I don’t expect any more iPod updates, ever.
The iPad mini replays the iPod touch and the Watch replaces the nano.
      They already killed the Classic.

You misread my comment I said iPad Nano as in iPad Micro. You understood iPod Nano. The only way an iPad can replace the iPod Touch is with a smaller screen. 4.7″ or 5.5″

Any chance of a Mac Mini update?

    • taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

Unlikely,It would be a minor update. With Broadwell chips looking unlikely for this year and Skylake scheduled for the middle of next year. Apple will probably go for smaller fanless mini’s when the chips are available. Mini’s would make a good trial for Apple own chips instead of Intel’s. I would love to see a fanless Mac mini that ran Yosemite and could also run iOS to be used an Apple TV. A pipe dream, but that would be pretty damn cool.

I have been hoping for a Mac mini update all year. The idea that they’re waiting on the Broadwell or Skylake chips lost a lot of weight when this summer they refreshed the Macbook Air lineup that already had Haswell chips with different Haswell chips and added a ‘new’ iMac that was just an iMac with a crappier Haswell chip. There’s gotta be something else going on. If they aren’t going to update the Mac mini, they could at least bump the price down.

I’m feeling good about my prediction of an event on the 21st and new iPad’s released on Halloween from over a month ago.

I hope Apple upgrades memory for the iPad Airs,1 GB is simply not enough. I have had daily crashes from memory every since they were released. With background updates turned off, notifications, and numerous other features turned off and still isn’t enough to stop the issue. Dual pane apps would be a stretch with the current amount of ram. I would like to see some iPad specific tweaks for iOS 8, but don’t see how many coming to precious iPads.

I hope to see new iMacs. I can’t tell you how long I been waiting for a reason to get one. I don’t see the 12″ MacBook Airs getting released unless Apple goes to their own chips for thr fanless design instead of waiting for Intel. Intel chips not being ready makes me think we won’t see a retina iMac or any new MacBooks.

I can’t see Apple highlighting Yosemite without any new macs either though. I just hope they don’t repeat the failed limited release of the last iMac and Mac Pro. I wouldn’t be suprised to see some completely new Mac product that uses Apple chips that is close to hybrid device so Apple can test the waters on ditching Intel so it can release products when they want and not wait on intel delays.

You’ve had daily crashes due to memory? Never, not once since Oct 2010 have any iPads of mine given me any indication of memory problems. What app(s) crash on you? Are you jailbreaking?

      • taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

Mostly Safari on the memory crashes. It’s been a daily thing. There is about 30 other apps I see crash logs for. I got desperate and turned off background apps, spot lot searches and many other suggestions to free up memory.

I don’t understand why they don’t spread their releases out… why cram EVERYTHING in the last few months, then all we hear about from February-August is how bad Apple is “doing”

Put the iPhone back to the June release. Keep iPads for closer to Christmas. Macs Feb/March.

    • taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

Apple has moved to releasing products along with iOS and OSX in September and October. I don’t see it changing soon. Apple won’t move up iPhones simply because so many people are locked into 2 year contacts and couldn’t update 3 months early unless the carriers worked with Apple to allow early upgrades. So the September and October events won’t likely go anywhere anytime soon.

Most likely most macs will see a February/ March upgrade this time, because of Intel’s horrible release of Broadwell.

It makes sense to release consumer products for the holiday season. Nothing better than holiday gifts than the latest gadget, rather than a model that will become replaced in 6 months.

I would like to see more Pro products released throughout the year, though.

I can only hope that Apple updates their monitors, I don’t care about 4K monitors, just care that I can plug in a monitor that will have thunderbolt and USB 3 slots so that it’s up to the time.

Its amazing to see apple going on and on and on. Because of Oct. 22nd event they had a tagline of ‘Wish we could say more’ for sept. 9 event :). Excited !

New Apple TV please, with apps and games.

    • Toby! (@TrashGoblin) - 10 years ago

The Apple TV doesn’t need apps and games. Apple just needs to incentivize/push developers to take better advantage of Air Play.

Wow, iPod Touch is my favorite product from them other than the Mac… hope they don’t discontinue it.

  11. Why did you refer Jim Dalrymple as “close-to-apple” ?

  12. patstar5 - 10 years ago

So they will have touch id, is that it? I wonder what will happen to ipod touch. I don’t see myself spending $400+ on an ipad so I will keep my 2 ontop of my dresser…
