Apple Expands Its Maps Flyover Coverage To Include Berkeley, East Bay Area

April 19, 2014

Apple has once again expanded its 3-D flyover coverage in the iOS Maps app, this time adding support for areas of California including Berkeley and the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay Area. The change comes following a number of further significant expansions made to iOS Maps in recent months.

The news reached us from AppleInsider, which explained: “Apple has expanded its 3D Maps Flyover support for the east side of the San Francisco Bay Area, including the city of Berkeley, the University of California birthplace of the flavor of Unix used in OS X and iOS.”

Back in March, we noted how Apple had added 3-D flyover support for Perth, Saint-Tropez, and Cordoba; before this, in January, a further report of ours explained that areas of Cape Town, Helsinki, and Marseilles had also received enhanced flyover coverage.

More recently, however, Apple has been testing a notification process for the iOS Maps application, which sees the app alert users when a previously-reported error in the software is corrected. Our article noted:

Though Apple previously allowed iOS device users to report problems with the Maps app, this is the first time Cupertino has sent push notifications out to users following up on the error. It appears the feature is presently being tested before Apple rolls it out to users worldwide.

Apple’s in-house mapping software first launched in 2012, and soon after the Cupertino, Calif. company was promising iOS device users that it’d “fix” the buggy application through a series of tweaks, updates, and performance enhancements.

Cupertino is continuing to hold true to this promise. For me, at least, the app largely seems to work as advertised – though 3-D flyover support hasn’t yet reached my corner of Merrie Olde England. In time, though, I’m sure it will.
