Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar has been released for iOS devices.

The free-to-play title serves as a sequel to 1985's Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar, taking place 20 years on from the events of its predecessor.

Developed by EA Mobile and Mythic Entertainment, the game tasks players with defending Britannia at the request of Lady British.

Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar will be a cross-platform release, with an Android version in development and a PC edition strongly rumoured.

Series creator Richard Garriott was not involved in the development of the title, but is revisiting the franchise with the upcoming Ultimate RPG, which is in the works at his Portalarium studio.

Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar is available to download for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch via iTunes.
