Chromecast Buyers May Have to Wait Three Months for Delivery

Some buyers of Google's video-streaming device through Amazon are being told their orders won't arrive until late October, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Google's new Chromecast video-streaming device is flying off the shelves—on paper anyway. It appears that demand for the $35 dongle has so far outstripped supplies to the point that some customers' back orders may not be filled until October.

Some Chromecast buyers who've bought the dongle through Amazon were being notified this week that their orders may not be filled for three months, The Wall Street Journal reported. Meanwhile, the Chromecast is also out of stock on Best Buy's site and Google itself is telling customers on its Play Store that the device will take two to three weeks to ship.

The Journal cited one Chromecast buyer who said he ordered his from Amazon on July 25, a day after Google launched the device, and was told it would arrive between Aug. 17 and 20. But on Thursday, the customer received an email informing him that his Chromecast wouldn't be delivered until as late as Oct. 30.

This isn't the first time Google has run into trouble trying to meet the clamoring demand for its Chromecast, which plugs into HDTVs and streams video from Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play at the direction of users' smartphones, tablets, or laptops. When the company introduced the device last month, it offered three free months of Netflix along with the purchase price as a too-good-to-be-true deal sweetener.

But within hours of Chromecast pre-orders becoming available, so many orders had piled up that Google ran out of pre-paid Netflix subscriptions and had to pull the plug on the promotion.
