It's tough to get motivated to exercise, right? Believe me, I know. While apps such as Fitocracy have revolutionized the gamification of such things, it still looks a lot like a workout app. Enter Ninja Fitness 3D, an app that tries to be more like a game than glorified spreadsheet.

Everyone loves ninjas, so Ninja Fitness 3D allows the user to create their own warrior based on their height, weight, and appearance. Users then participate in a series of workouts in order to boost their stats both in game and in real life. It's a fun way of doing things and certainly helped motivate me when trying to workout more.

Exercises are divided up into categories comprised of Strength, Agility, Endurance, and Zen. Each new workout is bought via ninja stars that are gained from completing previous workouts, or this can be skipped ahead with a $3.99 in-app purchase. Each workout gets steadily more challenging but also offers more points and stat increases. It's simple yet effective. Even better, none of the workouts require additional equipment meaning it's possible to do them pretty much anywhere.

For every different exercise a clear video is offered ensuring that no one could be confused as to what's required of them, with a counter available for them to track how many repetitions they can complete in a given time limit.

On many levels, Ninja Fitness 3D is a fairly straight-forward fitness app but it's the Ninja overlay and dash of humor that makes all the difference. It's amazing what a small change can do in terms of offering motivation.

Ninja Fitness 3D suffers slightly for its lack of push notifications so users will have to remain stoic in their aims to use it daily, but other than that it ticks all the boxes for a competent and potentially encouraging fitness app.
