Sticky Blobs may not look it, but it’s actually a smart and unique puzzle game.

I imagine most players will try to draw the same parallel that I did when I first saw Sticky Blobs. I mean it’s got blobs, physics, and a bizarre form of construction so it’s only natural to liken it that that one particular gooey world. However, there’s quite a bit more to these little balls of sludge than meets the eye.

Their home planet is running low on a precious resource, so an elite team of self-replicating blobs are sent to Earth in order to steal as much of it as they can. These essential items (i.e. raspberries) are scattered throughout 60 puzzles in 4 different worlds, and nabbing them doesn’t remain easy for long. At first players just have to tap and drag a finger off of a blob to spawn another, then tap to pop them and recover some of their limited supply of goo. It’s a simple process of daisy-chaining blobs along until one of them touches the raspberry at the end of the level, however more and more elements are introduced to make things much more of a challenge. Sometimes players will have to work their way around a spiky obstacle, or even use their slimy friends to pull objects out of their path. And the further they go, the more complicated it gets.

Sticky Blobs is pretty easy at first, but stick with it (*rimshot*). It doesn’t take long for the puzzles to get a lot more complex, and when they do they can be quite clever. Simply grabbing raspberries can be enough of a head-scratcher at times, but trying to collect all three stars hidden throughout each level can make each puzzle even more difficult and does a good job of keeping players invested.

It’s not much to look at, honestly, but Sticky Blobs looks good enough to get the job done. I found a bigger issue to be the blob-duplication controls. They work, but they can also be rather finicky. There were times when I wanted to produce another blob only to have the camera shift on me instead, which can be a real bother when trying to build quickly. It’s mostly a problem when trying to play with the camera zoomed out farther than the default view, but as levels get more complex this becomes more and more necessary (also more and more difficult to avoid).

Aside from the mildly spotty control issues, though, Sticky Blobs is a surprisingly great puzzle game. It’s super-easy to learn but gets more and more complicated as players progress, and many of the levels are very clever. Fans of physics puzzlers have absolutely nothing to lose by giving it a shot.
