Ustwo, the creators of some very successful and fun apps, has just launched a new game named Blip Blup. The game is a casual puzzler with a lot of challenging levels, simple controls, and straightforward game mechanics.

The controls and main concept are easy to grasp immediately. Simply touch a tile to begin a pulse of color that radiates out from the tile in all directions. Each tap is called a “blip” and players only get a certain amount of blips per level, so they have to be use strategically. Color will also go from one tile to another even if only one corner of each is touching.

The goal of Blip Blup is to solve the puzzle by filling all of the grey tiles with color. The levels can get very tricky because figuring out where to tap isn’t always straightforward. Often, levels have tiles that are in weird patterns and the answer isn’t immediately obvious. There are also wall blocks that stop the blip from spreading to other tiles. The game even includes special tiles, like exploding death tiles and gates.

Blip Blup has 10 level packs with over 140 levels. The first level pack includes tutorial and explanations of game mechanics, and players can preview the spread of a blip in the first two level packs by pressing and holding a tile. This means as long as long as players are a little patient and do some planning, the levels in the first two packs won’t be too challenging.

Blip Blup integrates with Game Center and has a lot of built-in achievements and global leaderboards. There isn’t an in-game store or in-game currency, which is nice, just a lot of levels. Also, for anyone with both an iPhone and iPad, the game is universal and progress syncs via iCloud.

Blip Blup is a fun and casual puzzle game. The gameplay and controls are simple, but the levels are constructed in a way that makes them interesting and challenging. I like that the app forgoes fancy graphics and an in-game store for a clean and flat design with few distractions from the gameplay. Puzzle fans will enjoy it and it is worth its $1.99 price tag.
