Microsoft is reportedly in talks with US-based car manufacturer Chrysler to become the sole provider of the infotainment system installed in its cars, according to a report.

Automotive News writes that Microsoft’s Uconnect’s 5.0 system, already installed on Fiat 500L and powered by Windows Embedded Automotive, could replace the existing Uconnect infotainment solution available in Chrysler models, such as the 2013 Ram 1500.

The system, which uses a 5-inch touchscreen display and support for a wide array of devices, including smartphones and tablets, could make its way to Chrysler models as soon as next year if the deal goes through.

Given the fact that Microsoft is aiming to provide in-car connectivity for several mobile devices, a Windows 8-based version of its infotainment system would pretty much make sense, even though it’s not yet clear if Microsoft is willing to develop a new version of the software based on its flagship operating system.
