Apple's shipments of the iPad mini will reportedly be about 20 percent thinner in the second quarter of the year, DigiTimes reported.

Citing various unnamed sources, the news site - which has a spotty record when it comes to Apple rumors - blamed the cuts on increased competition from 7-inch Android tablets, saying that total shipments of the tiny tablet will be 10-12 million units in the second quarter.

The downsizing, DigiTimes said, comes as Cupertino adjusts its reserves in preparation for the next-generation iPad mini, rumored for release in the third quarter. Apple has also reportedly changed its 2013 shipment estimates for the iPad and iPad mini to 33 million and 55 million, respectively.

Cupertino's tablet has been good to the company, joining the iPhone 5 to make up 20.3 percent of all connected devices in the fourth quarter, IDC said this week. In the fourth quarter of 2012, Apple sold 22.9 million tablets; while the company didn't break out stats on iPad vs. iPad mini, it saw "strong sales" of both versions.

The iPad mini debuted in October, with a 7.9-inch 1,024-by-768 screen and dual-core A5 processor from Apple. It supports FaceTime HD and features a 5-megapixel camera, as well as LTE connectivity and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.

Pricing starts at $329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi version; the 32GB Wi-Fi costs $429, while the 64GB is $529. The Wi-Fi plus cellular versions sell for $459 (16GB),$559 (32GB), and $659 (64GB).

There were reports that Apple was also cutting production on the iPhone 5, but Tim Cook shrugged off the rumors. "Even if a particular data point were factual," that doesn't tell the whole story, Cook said in January. "It would be impossible to actually interpret as to what it meant for our overall business."
