Apple has reportedly cut its iPad mini orders for the second quarter of 2013 by as much as 20% in preparation for the next-generation device. Shipments of the current iPad mini could be as low as 10 million units during the quarter, according to “multiple sources who provide various components” for the device.

DigiTimes reports:

Apple has reportedly cut its shipments of the iPad mini to between 10-12 million units for the second quarter of 2013, according to industry sources. The figure is based on shipment information given from multiple sources who provide various components for Apple’s iPad mini.

The cut will allow Apple to adjust its reserves in preparation for the second-generation iPad mini, which is expected to launch during the third quarter. However, sources also claim that increased competition from “various 7-inch Android tablets” has also been a contributing factor.

Apple expects to ship 88 million iPads in 2013, according to its latest estimate, with the 9.7-inch iPad accounting for 33 million of those, and the iPad mini accounting for 55 million. According to recent rumors, the iPad mini 2 could offer a high-resolution Retina display, a faster A6X processor, and an improved rear-facing camera.
