Google on Monday launched new versions of its Google+ app for iPhone and Android, complete with a refreshed design, photo filters, and a number of other goodies.
Google said it made improvements to the apps in four key areas: photos, posts, profiles, and communities. First up, the iPhone version is getting some photo enhancement features from Google's recently acquired Snapseed photo editing and sharing app.
When uploading an image, the Google+ for iPhone app now lets you do basic edits like rotate and crop as well as spice up your photo with Instagram-like filters such as "Cool," "Contrast," "Drama," and "Retrolux." You can also adjust the saturation, brightness, and contrast of your image by sliding your fingers up and down, then left and right. You'll be able to compare your creation to the original at any time with a single tap on the photo.
"Of course: you can always download Snapseed for more advanced features (like control points)," Google+ director of product management, Amar Gandhi, wrote in a blog post Monday. "Today's release just brings the Snapseed basics inside the Google+ iPhone app."
Meanwhile, the new Android version boasts a refreshed stream design, which aims to help you "see more and do more in less time," Google said. Posts, for instance, will now display more text from the original message and comments. Most images are now shown in their full glory without any cropping, and you can swipe through photo albums inline.
Those with nothing to hide can now display their current location on their Google+ profile. If you enable this option, you'll be able to decide who can see your location. Then, when someone with permission visits your profile, they will see your current whereabouts under your name.
Finally, the updates bring more community controls to the iPhone and Android apps. From your mobile device, you can now tweak the amount of community posts that appear in your Google+ home screen, as well as invite people to a community. For community managers, there's support for member search, content moderation, and the ability to report or remove someone.
The updated apps are now available for download in Google Play and the App Store.
