The Australian parliament will be summoning Apple to explain how they set prices, after the discovery that Rihanna's album Unapologetic is 49% more expensive to buy from iTunes in Australia than the US.

Australian lawmakers have also called Microsoft and Adobe Systems Inc. on threat of contempt proceedings.

A 2012 survey revealed that software and hardware products in Australia sell for a median 50% more than their US equivalents.

The measures being considered by lawmakers could see the companies facing restrictions of their ability to set prices in Australia.

Matthew Rimmer, a professor at Australian National University in Canberra who specialises in copyright law, said: "There's been price discrimination against Australian consumers.

"If the distribution is digital, why are the prices so much higher?"
