AMD and partners are releasing new Radeon HD 7790 graphics cards aimed at the mid-level enthusiast gamer. Priced in the $149 range, these cards slot in nicely between the mainstream $109 Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition and the higher-end Radeon HD 7800 cards like the $179 Radeon HD 7850. Likewise, the performance of the new card is expected to slot in between the two models, with a few new enhancements, of course.

The Radeon HD 7790 now features full DX11.1 (feature level 11_1) support, 14 compute units, 16 render output units, 1.79 TFLOPS of compute power, and 2.08 billion transistors. The card is based on the AMD Bonaire GPU, using the same Graphics Core Next architecture as the rest of the Radeon HD 7700-7900 cards. The Radeon HD 7790 features a newly enhanced version of AMD PowerTune, which dynamically adjusts the GPU's clock speed and voltage to give the user better performance on the fly. PowerTune is still based on TDP levels, as opposed to Nvidia's new temperature-based clocking found in the top-end GeForce Titan cards.

Base models of the Radeon HD 7790 will feature 1GB of graphics memory at $149. But slightly more expensive 2GB cards in the $182-$200 price range will constitute the sweet spot with more graphics memory, more memory bandwidth, and a higher pixel fillrate. AMD will be bundling Bioshock Infinite as part of its Never Settle bundle, and you'll find a plethora of third-party cards with improved cooling and overclock settings.
