HP To Launch Android-Based, Tegra-Powered Tablets

This article is more than 10 years old.

Hewlett-Packard is planning to launch a line of Android-based tablets, according to the tech site ReadWrite, and also is mulling an entrance into the Android smartphone market. The story is sourced to "two sources familiar with the matter." HP isn't commenting, though CEO Meg Whitman in the past has made it clear that she thinks the company needs to be in the mobile device business.

The story says HP's first Android device will be a high-end tablet using an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor.

The post notes that HP is holding private meetings during the Mobile World Congress in Barcleona later this month and  might show off the new Android tablet there, but adds that an official launch at MWC is not planned.

HP's move into the Android-based devices comes at a time when Microsoft has agreed to provide $2 billion in financing to help Dell founder Michael Dell take his company private.
