Sonos is making a play for the living room with a new soundbar that connects to your television.

The Santa Barbara, Calif.-based company on Tuesday introduced the Sonos Playbar, a 3-foot long rectangular system packed with nine individually amplified speakers that promises to provide amazing sound for games, movies, and music. The device will set you back $700 once it's available globally beginning March 5.

The Playbar boasts six mid-woofers "to deliver deep, rich low-frequency sounds," and three tweeters for "crystal clear high-frequency detail," Sonos said. The device was designed to provide audio that is clear and crisp, not just loud.

It can connect to the TV with a single optical cable, and play audio from everything connected to it, including cable boxes, Blu-ray players, and game consoles. It can also be controlled by a smartphone or tablet with the free Sonos app to stream music from a home computer, or other music services like Spotify, Pandora, Rhapsody, and Amazon Cloud Player.

The Playbar can be paired with other Sonos products a user may have, including the Sonos Sub for "deep waves of spine-curling, jaw-dropping sound," or the Play:3 for wireless surround sound.

Sonos said the Playbar was designed for easy setup and use. It can lie flat on a TV stand or be mounted on the wall above or below the TV.

"Sonos has transformed the way people listen to music throughout the home and now we're bringing our wireless HiFi [high fidelity] approach to home theater," Sonos CEO John MacFarlane said in a statement. "Playbar will change everything about the sound experience in your living room, bringing together amazing HiFi sound for your TV and wireless access to the world's music in a radically simple way."

The Sonos Playbar will be available for purchase at Sonos.com, Amazon.com, Best Buy, and P.C. Richard & Son, among other retailers.
