I Love You, iPhone. Happy Valentine's Day!

gyro

The season of love is upon us, and as my iPhone reminds me to buy flowers for my significant other, I’m also reminded that, as a tech geek, my true love is actually my iPhone. Smartphones do so many incredible things and have changed the way we do, well, everything.

But what’s more exciting is that we haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of smartphone capability. New devices are changing, yet again, our relationship with our phones. Take the Square, for example, the tiny device released last year that turns an iPhone into a cash register. It’s a small add-on that makes us love our phones even more. And there are more innovative options on the way. Here are a few coming down the pipeline that I found on indiegogo.com that have me absolutely quivering in nerdy twitterpation.

Three New Reasons to Fall in Love with the iPhone

iSmartAlarm

I’ve never wanted a security system—mostly because it costs a zillion dollars every month and requires an 80-year contract. But this smartphone device, iSmartAlarm, turns an iPhone into a full-on security and monitoring system. Once you buy the system and sync it to the app, it lets you know when someone enters or exits your home, and sends you five pictures moments apart, so you can see who it is and what that person is up to. If there’s possible danger, the app automatically sends a text alert to your family as you call 911.  This app would be great to monitor curfew-breaking teenagers and sneaky pets. Being paranoid has never been easier!

Fitness Bracelet

This fitness bracelet, Amiigo, can recognize and track any kind of exercise automatically, monitoring details like reps, sets, speed and even intensity. It’s smart, so it’s designed to learn about the user as it goes along, understanding needs and recommending exercises to help the user reach his or her goals. Plus, it’s social. You can set goals and monitor your progress, share results, create competitions with friends, and earn points that you can redeem for other actual health-related add-ons. It’s like Nike Plus on steroids.

Smart Bulbs

This smart bulb, iLumi, is a multicolored LED bulb that can be controlled with an iPhone. From a single lamp to all the lighting in your entire house, you can control and adjust the color, shade and brightness. That alone is cool, but the part that really gets my heart racing is how it integrates the functions of a smartphone with the lighting. For example, you can set the lights to sync with your alarm, so the light gradually turns on as your phone wakes you with, say, Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.” It can gradually brighten the lights as the sun rises, and gradually dim them when it’s time for bed. It can sense your location, so you can set your lights to turn on when you enter, turn off when you leave, or light your path as you walk down the hall, and so on. And for the socially advanced nerd, the system even lets you sync your lights to pulse and change to music. That feels like the future. And, of course, it’s an LED, so it lasts up to 20 years and uses less energy than a normal light bulb, thus making sure we have a lot of future ahead of us.

We live in an exciting time, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. With more and more cool apps and features coming out every day, it’s only a matter of time before you teleport home to your pet dinosaur clone after a long day working at the Starship factory on Mars—all controlled with your iBrain. Hey, it could happen, and sooner than you think.
