Which Apps Are Coming to BlackBerry 10 - And Which Aren't?

BlackBerry 10 will launch in the U.S. with 100,000 apps. Here are some of the big names coming to the platform.

Research In Motion BlackBerry App World

BlackBerry 10 just launched with 70,000 apps in BlackBerry World, which is far more than any other mobile app store had at launch. BlackBerry's problem, of course, is that it isn't competing with other stores "at launch" — it's competing with Android and iOS now, with more than half a million apps each.

But as BlackBerry execs said at the launch event — which I agree with — the real value of an app store isn't the sheer number of Chinese Fruit Ninja clones you can pack into your Games section, but the number of high-profile, mass-appeal apps that everyone wants.

To that end, BlackBerry has targeted the 100-200 top apps per country and is aggressively courting those developers, execs said. This is an ongoing process, of course: getting all the popular apps for January doesn't mean you'll have what's popular in April.

For now, here's a list of many of the high profile apps which RIM has announced, whether or not they're in the store right now, followed by some prominent brands which they haven't announced yet. I built this list by combining a bunch of different press releases, scrutinizing the icons on the slides during the BlackBerry 10 launch presentation, and downloading a bunch of apps for a "top BlackBerry 10 games" feature that's running tomorrow.

So What's Missing?

That's a decent list to start, but once again: BlackBerry 10 isn't competing with other platforms starting out. Here are some apps that I didn't find on the list or in BlackBerry World.

Finance - Mint, as well as a lot of banks that aren't Canadian.

News and Reading - AP Mobile, Flipboard, Nook, Pocket, and Zite.

Streaming video services - Amazon Instant Video, HBO GO, Netflix, Showtime, and TV.com are all absent.

Social - Instagram, Pinterest, and Yelp, as well as any third-party Twitter client because the built-in one is very basic.

Travel - American Airlines, BA, Expedia, Google Maps, Kayak, Orbitz, Priceline, Travelocity, Tripit, and most brand-name GPS apps.

This doesn't mean that none of these apps are coming, just that we haven't heard about them yet. What else would you want to see on BlackBerry 10 that would make you buy the platform? Tell us in the comments below.
