Yesterday, an FCC filing for a new Apple TV model appeared to show off a smaller case, but The Verge has learned that there's no redesign forthcoming. Despite what it says on the FCC image, the new Apple TV model will be identical in size and indistinguishable from the current one, outside of a new model number. The new model only contains a minor component change and shouldn't be mistaken as a new, "fourth-generation" Apple TV — it'll function (and look) exactly like the current model. The only way people will know the difference is if they check the model number, or crack the device open and check the components out themselves. While it's possible this component change will be the rumored upgrade to the A5x processor, we were unable to confirm what the specific change will be. Either way, Apple says that the Apple TV experience won't be changing with this new model.

An Apple spokesperson gave us the following statement:

We sometimes make component changes which require an updated model number for regulatory approval. The component changes we made don't affect product features and Apple TV customers will continue to have the same great user experience.
