Wave Trip is a beautiful, unique, musical iOS game. It borrows elements from the arcade and infinite runner genres, but is focused around music. Players decide to play a certain level, which is actually a song. The song sounds different, though, depending on how well the player makes it through the level. For instance, hitting an enemy causes a break in the song. Collecting the different shaped notes, which are technically called coins, adds beats into the rhythm and increases the player’s points. It reminds me of Guitar Hero, because in both games doing well makes the song come out well and doing poorly makes the song sound bad. The sound a note makes depends on what it looks like and its location on the screen, so in essence the screen is like one giant musical staff.

There are only two controls in the game. One is for a shield and the other is to accelerate upwards. Players control a black and white avatar that is shaped like a triangle and has one eye. It sounds weird, but it fits with the artistic style of the game. The triangle will fall to the bottom of the screen if players don’t press and hold the right side of the screen and the shield is used to blast enemies out of the way.

There are four different level packs and each one has a different look and feel. For instance, one is in a cave and another is over plains. The levels also have different types of enemies and obstacles, some that move and other that don’t. Unlike many games, players can choose the order in which they play all the levels. There is no unlocking a level pack or that sort of thing.

Wave Trip even includes a level editor. Players can decide the setting of the level and then place any of the different notes and enemies. The level editor is always moving a bar across the screen so the different notes are looped and users can hear what hitting all the notes will sound like. The beats per minutes can be changed and the entire level can be uploaded and shared. The app also allows users to browse other people’s creations and play them.

Wave Trip is a great game. Not only does it look beautiful, but the game play is innovative and novel. The only thing I didn’t like is that the introduction level doesn’t really explain all of the intricacies of the game. I think players would appreciate the levels more if they understood how exactly everything is working. But besides that, Wave Trip is delivers an almost flawless gameplay experience and sweetens the deal even more with the level editor.
