Verizon: iPhone Makes Up Two Thirds of Smartphone Activations

Verizon released its fourth fiscal quarter numbers for 2012 on Tuesday, revealing that 6.2 million of its 9.8 million smartphone activations were iPhones. Of the remaining smartphone activations, nearly all were Android devices, and tablet sales doubled compared to the previous quarter, too.

The carrier ended its fiscal year with 35.1 million postpaid accounts, up 1.4 percent compared to the same quarter in 2011, and up 4.3 percent year over year. Much of that growth is attributed to Verizon's nationwide LTE expansion.

Verizon's iPhone activations during its third fiscal quarter topped out at 3.1 million units, with about 21 percent made up of iPhone 5 sales. The iPhone 5 percentage was up during the fourth quarter, although the latest model still makes up only about 50 percent of Verizon's total iPhone sales.

Verizon also announced that it has stopped adding to its 3G network in favor of growing its LTE coverage areas even more. That decision makes sense considering about 23 percent of the mobile devices on its network are LTE-compatible.
