Swipe Review

The App Store is flooded with many different photo caption apps so it can be difficult to find just the right one. Some apps don’t have many fonts while others don’t offer enough customization features. Swipe aims to make adding text or captions to photos as simple as possible thanks to its intuitive and easy-to-use interface.

When Swipe launches for the first time, users get started by tapping on the plus button in the upper left corner to add a photo. A photo can be taken with the iOS camera or imported from the camera roll. Once a photo is added, users simply swipe in the desired direction to add text.

There are different customization features for the text and they are all accessed by tapping on the paintbrush above the keyboard. One of these options includes the ability to change the font type. Swipe comes with over 100 different fonts. At first it looks like the fonts are limited, but users just need to scroll down to view them all.

There are many other options to help users personalize their photos. The edit screen also features font color, transparency, rotation, font size and alignment. Most of the options are changed by swiping across a sliding scale. The caption itself can easily be maneuvered on the picture by just touching and dragging. There’s also a swipe snap feature for those who need help adding straight lines of text.

After users are satisfied with the caption, tapping on the check mark allows them to save or share the photo. There are different ways to share such as Instagram, Twitter, Flickr, Postcard and Facebook. Saved photos can be accessed in the built in photo gallery where users can view, share and even edit them again and again.

Swipe is rather intuitive, but it lacks a help or tutorial section for those who may need more assistance. I was a little confused when first using the app, but it didn’t take long to figure it out. The only real issue I had involved the response time of the slider scales—specifically the font size one. I often experienced a slight lag time when sliding the scales, which proved to be frustrating at times.

Overall, Swipe is an impressive photo caption app that stands out from others similar to it due to its beautiful interface and wide range of editing options. It isn’t loaded with other frills like frames or photo filters, but that’s not what this app is about. Swipe creates attractive typography, and it does it quite well. For under a buck, it’s well worth adding to the photo editing library.
